Official Visit to the Kingdom of Thailand of H.E. Maithripala Sirisena,

President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

1-4 November 2015

President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena and his delegation paid an Official Visit to Thailand from 1-4 November 2015 at the invitation of General Prayut Chan-o-Cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, 

At the outset, I offer my profound gratitude to President Peña Nieto and the Mexican government for its gracious welcome and hospitality accorded to us in this historic city of Mexico. I also congratulate Mexico, as the outgoing lead chair of the Open Government Partnership for its efficient stewardship of this forum and look forward to working with co-chairs South Africa and France in the coming year.

Condolence message on Earthquake in Afghanistan

The Government and people of Sri Lanka are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and destruction to property caused by the devastating earthquake in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan on Monday 26thOctober, 2015 which also affected parts of India and Pakistan.  

Sri Lanka stands in support and solidarity with the Governments and those affected in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan and wish to convey deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this catastrophic disaster, and to those injured a speedy recovery. 

The thoughts and prayers of the people of Sri Lanka are with those have been affected and it is our hope that they will have the strength and courage to overcome the difficult challenges.

UN Asst. Secretary-General Jenca meets Foreign Minister Samaraweera

The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Miroslav Jenca, who is currently on a visit to Sri Lanka (21-25 October 2015), called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera yesterday, 21 October. His visit follows recent discussions between the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President Maithripala Sirisena in New York in September.
