Canadian Assistant Deputy Minister for Asia Pacific Donald Bobiash meets Foreign Minister and Foreign Secretary 

Assistant Deputy Minister for Asia Pacific of Global Affairs Canada, Donald Bobiash, met Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana and Foreign Secretary Prasad Kariyawasam on 26 February 2018. Discussions included exploring possibilities for improving trade, promoting Canada as a destination for Sri Lankan students, advancing reconciliation in Sri Lanka, and setting up a mechanism for structured regular engagement between Canada and Sri Lanka.

Visit of Hon. Vasantha Senanayake, State Minister of Foreign Affairs to Poland

15-16 February 2018

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Vasantha Senanayake visited Poland from 15 to 16 February at the invitation of the Government of Poland to conduct bilateral consultations to explore ways and means to promote political and economic relations.

Sri Lanka High Commission

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the Field of Science and Technology between Sri Lanka and South Africa was signed on 31^st January 2018, in Pretoria at the Department of Science and Technology (DST), further strengthening the existing excellent relations between the two countries. On behalf of Sri Lanka, the MoU was signed by Mr. Udaya Senevirathne, Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology and Research, and Hon. Naledi Pandor, Minister in charge of the subject, Science and Technology, signed on behalf of South Africa. The two countries are expected to setup a Joint Working Group to identify and implement future Programs in the relevant fields. By signing the Document, the two countries agree to promote and encourage scientific research and technological progress in sectors of mutual benefit. The areas of cooperation covered by the MoU include biotechnology, nanotechnology, traditional and herbal medicine, space technology and manufacturing.

The 70^th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence was celebrated at the Sri Lanka  High Commissioner’s Official Residence in Canada in the presence of over 160 guests who braved a wintry afternoon to be present on the occasion.

If one is to truly fathom the value of independence, it is essential to understand the pain being oppressed and subservient in the face of a foreign power. This is why we are grateful to all our heroes who sacrificed their lives in order to restore and sustain our nation’s independence. On a day like today, when the value of freedom is commemorated, the nation pays tribute to its true patriots whose contribution to our motherland is invaluable.

The High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in India, Chitranganee Wagiswara signed the Framework Agreement of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) on 31^st January 2018 at the Ministry of External Affairs of India in New Delhi. The signed documents were handed over to Mr. Nagaraj Naidu, Joint Secretary (Investments, Technology Promotion and Energy Security Division) of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.  Once the Agreement is ratified, Sri Lanka will become a founding member of the International Solar Alliance.
