SLHC at the Ottawa Travel and Vacation Show

The  Sri Lanka High Commission participated at the 18th  Travel & Vacation Show  at the  Ottawa Convention Centre on 10 &11 th March 2012. The SriLankan Airlines was also associated with the High Commission.

According to the organizers , there were approximately 18,000 visitors at the event where 200 exhibitors  including Tourism Boards of various countries, Tour operators, embassies participated at the event.   Deputy High Commissioner Mr Lionel Premasiri made a DVD presentation at the special country segment. High Commissioner  Ms Chitranganee Wagiswara and Manager  Canada  for SriLankan  Airlines Mr Lalith Wickremasinghe welcomed the visitors. SriLankan Airlines  handed over  its   own complimentary ‘Tea’ packets  to the visitors. Members from the Sri Lankan community assisted in the efforts of the High Commission.

 

Statement by Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs

It is a matter of great satisfaction to us that 15 countries voted with Sri Lanka, despite the intensity of pressure, in a variety of forms, exerted on them all.  We convey to them our warm thanks and deep appreciation.

We also thank sincerely the 8 countries which, by abstaining, declined to support the Resolution.

With 15 countries voting with SriLanka, and 8 countries abstaining, the final result was that 23 countries, out of a total of 47 members of the Human Rights Council, did not support the Resolution, while 24 supported it. The margin was as narrow as this.

High Commissioner Wagiswara addressed Canadian Parliamentarians

The High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Canada Mrs. Chitranganee Wagiswara addressed a gathering of the Members of the House of Commons at a breakfast meeting convened by Joe Daniel, M.P, for Don Valley East constituency, held in the Canadian Parliament on March 13, 2012.  The meeting was Chaired by Brad Butt, M.P, for Mississauga-Streetville constituency.

Terrorist fronts in Canada traps Amnesty International

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) contributed C$ 50,000 to Amnesty International (AI) in Canada in January 2012. The CTC is a Front of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a ruthless terrorist group defeated in Sri Lanka. After supporting LTTE's terrorist agenda for a decade, CTC is today seeking to manipulate the Human Rights agenda.

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa celebrated the 64th Anniversary of Independence on 4th February at the High Commissioner’s Residence with the participation of the High Commission Staff and their families and the main Office Bearers of the  Sri Lanka Canada Association of Ottawa.

Visit of Canadian Parliamentary Delegation to Sri Lanka

On the invitation of the Acting Minister of External Affairs Hon. Neomal Perera, a Parliamentary delegation from Canada comprising Hon. Chungen Leung (M.P.), Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multiculturalism and Deputy Minister of the Government of Canada, Hon. Joe Daniel (M.P.), and Marlene Gallyot, Member of the Conservative Party visited Sri Lanka from 8th to 11th January, 2012.  The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Acting Minister at the Ministry of External Affairs.

Sri Lanka High Commission in Ottawa celebrates Thai Pongal

The Sri Lanka High Commission in Ottawa celebrated Thai Pongal which is the harvest festival generally celebrated by Hindus all over the world.  

The event was held on Saturday 21st January 2012 at the High Commissioner’s Residence.  The invitees included Sri Lankan Pensioners living in Ottawa.

Issue of a Personalised Stamp in Canada

Following  reports in the LTTE affiliated websites and media on the alleged issue of a personalised stamp by Canada Post Corporation promoting the LTTE’s separatist  agenda which also includes a reference to “genocide”, the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Canada on 3rd January 2012 sent two letters, one to Denis Lebel, MP, Minister responsible for Canada Post Corporation and the other to Mr. Deepak Chopra, President and CEO of Canada post to register Sri Lanka’s protest and expressing the deep concern of the High Commission on this matter. This issue  was also brought to the notice of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Canada.
