RECOGNITION OF SRI LANKANS

The 65th Anniversary of Independence will be celebrated on 4th February, 2013, and the High Commission is in the process of organizing this landmark event with the Sri Lankan Community on Sunday, 10th February 2013 at the Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street  Ottawa, ON K1A 0N4.

Sri Lanka and Canada to work together against Human Smuggling

Canada’s Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney called on External Affairs Minister Prof G.L. Pieris yesterday. It was noted that a ministerial level visit from Canada was taking place after three years and the two ministers welcomed the opportunity for a candid exchange of views on a range of bilateral issues.

Ottawa Tea Festival: Sharing Culture through the Language of Tea

With the intention of promoting the tea drinking culture in Canada the Sri Lanka High Commission in Ottawa for the second time participated at the Tea Festival held on 1st December 2012 at the Ottawa Convention Centre.  The Sri Lanka Tea Board provided the High Commission with complimentary tea and other promotional material.

George Keyts’ Stained Glass Mural in Montreal

High Commissioner Chitranganee Wagiswara accompanied by Minister Counsellor Sumith Dassanayake recently visited the  Library Marie-Uguay in Montreal, Canada where George Keyts’ one and only stained glass installation which was created based on Keyts stupendous canvas ‘Lanka Matha’ is now displayed.

Deepavali Celebrated in Canada for a Third Time

The Deepavali Festival was celebrated once again for the third time organized by the Sri Lanka High Commission in Ottawa and, the Consulate General  on 18th November 2012 at the Don Bosco Auditorium in Toronto.

Sri Lanka Delegation attends Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Quebec City, Canada

The 127th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly was held in Quebec City, Canada from 21st to 26th October 2012. The IPU is an International Organization of Parliamentarians of Sovereign States established in 1889 and, is the focal point for Parliamentarians worldwide to discuss current international issues and a forum to work towards peace and cooperation and, for the maintenance of representative democracy.

Developing Nations Require Greater Focus in International System : Professor G.L. Peiris addressing UN General Assembly

Sri Lanka believes that in the settlement of international disputes, action must be based on the fundamental principle of sovereign equality of states, a principle firmly enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, stated Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs in his address yesterday to the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly. He regretted that the noticeable recent tendency to selectively and arbitrarily intervene in the internal affairs of States flies in the face of this principle, and dilutes the confidence so carefully nurtured in the UN system.

A Session on ‘ Art of Well-being ‘ Organized by the High Commission in Ottawa

The Sri Lanka High Commission in Ottawa, Canada organised an interactive session on Art of Well-being – a spiritual journey using ancient wisdom of Sri Lanka at the prestigious Libraries and Archives Canada in Ottawa. The session was followed by a display and promotion of Ceylon Tea as a health drink.
